The 3-2-1 Backup Rule: Prevent Data Loss the Smart Way

The 3-2-1 rule is simple: keep three copies of your data — one working copy plus two backups, stored on two different media types, with at least one copy off-site.

Why two media types? If a ransomware attack or a fire destroys your server and its on-site NAS together, a single protection method leaves you with nothing. Off-site backup (cloud or a secure remote location) protects against site-level disasters.

A backup you've never restored is a hope, not a plan. Test restores quarterly and monitor backup jobs daily. Small businesses usually discover 'the backup was failing for months' only after they need it.
