How to Right-Size a Server for Your Business

Right-sizing means fixing your requirements before choosing the hardware. Count users, list the applications and databases the server will host, and estimate storage growth across three years — then size to match.

As a starting frame: 10–25 users on file services and one line-of-business app usually need a single-socket server with 32 GB RAM and RAID 1 or RAID 5 storage. Databases, virtual machines, and heavier applications push you to 64 GB+ and RAID 10.

Always leave headroom: 20–30% spare CPU and RAM for growth, and a RAID configuration that handles at least one drive failure. And remember server hardware only protects data if your backups are tested.
