Setting Up a Small Office Network: A Step-by-Step Guide
A reliable small-office network stacks four layers: a business-grade router or firewall for internet access, a managed switch for wired devices, enterprise WiFi access points, and structured cabling between them.
For 10–50 users, use two or three WiFi access points planned for coverage rather than one strong router, and cable the heavy users (desktops, servers, printers) to the switch. This relieves wireless congestion and improves speed for everyone.
Label every cable and port, document the IP scheme, and set up VLANs — one for staff, one for guest WiFi, one for phones and cameras. Good documentation makes future troubleshooting a fraction of the effort.
